1 Day Courses and workshops

For an informative day where you can bring pictures and measurements of your own gardens and apply Fiona's suggestions to your situation using practical examples. Each one day courses covers a different topic relating to aspects of garden design.

Introduction to Garden Design‘ is a theory based course on the basic building blocks used to develop your garden design. 

Other courses and workshops focus towards the plants themselves, incorporating design principles to maximise results for you situation. 

Our 1 day courses are ideal for those who have an interest in gardening and want to improve their own gardens.

For those looking for inspiration or to try something different in their gardens, our two hour workshops have a lot of practical information and time spent out in the gardens with some hands-on experience.

2026 Course dates

  • 'Introduction To Garden Design' - Wednesday 18th February & Thursday 24th September.
    • ​This is an intensive guide to designing your own garden from start to finish. All aspects of the process are covered from site survey, measuring up, the design process itself, drawing up plans, hard landscaping, and planting design. It is perfect for anyone keen to design their own garden or an excellent taster for those thinking about pursuing Garden Design as a career.  Suitable for all levels of experience. With lunch included, and free entry to the gardens as well it represents excellent value, and would make a lovely gift or day out for someone.
  • 'Planting For All Year Colour' - Wednesday 11th March.
    • 1 day course where you will learn the principles of planting design to give your garden structure and form, as well as which plants to choose so that it is packed with colour for 12 months of the year.  Suitable for all levels of experience. With lunch included, and free entry to the gardens as well it represents excellent value, and would make a lovely gift or day out for someone.
  • 'Planting For Autumn Colour' - Wednesday 14th October.
    • Many people struggle to keep the colour in their gardens going after the summer has passed but on this 1 day course Fiona will show you how to plant your garden so that it looks good and is full of colour from late summer right through the autumn.  Suitable for all levels of experience With lunch included, and free entry to the gardens as well it represents excellent value, and would make a lovely gift or day out for someone.

Courses start at 10.45am with a hot drink and finish at 4pm. Lunch is a one hour break during which students are welcome to explore Green Island Gardens.

 

2026 Workshop Dates

  • 'Propagation Workshop' - Wednesday 16th September 11am-1pm. 
  • A practical course demonstrating many different methods of propagating new plants. (Unfortunately this workshop is not suitable for people with limited mobility.)  

6 Week Garden Design Course

The 6 Week Garden Design Course is a great way to achieve a beautifully designed and planted garden without having to hire a professional.

The course will run for 6 Wednesdays from 10:30am until 12:30pm and each week Fiona will cover a different aspect of the garden design process, from the initial survey, to inspiration, history of garden design, outline proposals, hard landscaping and planting as well as graphic drawing skills. We share with you the practices and tricks that professionals use to greatly improve your garden design. 

Each week a certain amount of homework is assigned, taking what has been discussed during the class and applying it to your own garden, while this is not mandatory it will ensure maximum benefits from the course.

At the end of the 6 weeks you will have created a design tailored to your garden, ready to be implemented to create your own little piece of paradise.

This course is ideal for those who have a keen interest in gardening and want to improve their own gardens without the time and expense of employing a professional garden designer.  

2026: Commencing Wednesday 18th March and continuing every  Wednesday until Wednesday 29th April (Excluding Wednesday 8th April) 

10:30am - 12:30pm

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the course start time.

Alongside our own courses and workshops, the gardens have hosted a variety of classes and events– from yoga and meditation to painting and drawing classes.
